Dubbels, Tripels & Quadrupels


Dubbel, tripel, and quadrupel Belgian beers differ in strength and flavor, with a dubbel being malt-forward and slightly sweet, usually around 6-7% alcohol. Tripels are stronger at 8-9% with fruity, spicy notes, while quadrupels are the richest and most robust, reaching 10% or more with deep flavors of caramel, dark fruit, and spices.

Westmalle Trappist Dubbel - Single

Westmalle Dubbel (7%) is a deep red-brown beer with a rich, complex flavor, enhanced by bottle re-fermentation. You’ll notice hints of caramel, malt, and fruity esters that evoke the taste of ripe bananas. The beer is crowned with a dense, cream-colored head, and as you finish, a beautiful lace pattern forms on the inside of the glass. The long, dry finish of this well-balanced, mild Trappist beer lingers pleasantly. Trappist or Dubbel? In 1865, the monks of Westmalle began brewing a dark Trappist beer alongside their table beer. In 1926, they refined the recipe by doubling the quantities of raw ingredients, resulting in a stronger beer. The name "Dubbel" reflects this increased strength, though it’s often simply referred to as ‘Trappist’. The recipe from 1926 remains the foundation for Westmalle Dubbel today. Lindemans Kriek - Single

As we’ve mentioned before, our family never follows the usual path, and Kriek Lindemans is a perfect example of this. For generations, we've been adding whole sour cherries to our lambic to create a beer unlike any other. A pivotal moment came in the 1970s when American importer Charles Finkel introduced us to a new opportunity—exporting our traditional kriek to the United States by boat. What we hadn’t anticipated was that the movement of the waves would reactivate the fermentation, causing the corks to pop during the journey. It felt like something straight out of The Adventures of Tintin. To avoid this, we developed a new production method for our kriek. Instead of using concentrate, we blend fresh, unsweetened cherry filtrate with lambic that is at least one year old. The mixture is then fermented and macerated for up to three days before being pasteurized. This prevents the corks from popping and results in a sweeter, fruitier kriek.
